This is for people living alone in a small apartment, especially when the entryway gets wet from umbrellas, shoes, bags, and coats. By following the same short routine every time, you can reset the genkan in two or three minutes after coming home.

1

Place the wet umbrella in a stand first

Step 1

After entering, do not lean the umbrella against the wall. Close it, point the tip downward, and place it into a slim umbrella stand near the door.

💡Explanation

This handles the item that drips the most before water spreads across the floor.

⚠️Notes / Precautions

Do not put a wet umbrella straight into a shoe cabinet, as it can leave a damp smell.

2

Wipe your bag and sleeves with a small towel

Step 2

Keep a small rain towel on the entry shelf. Wipe the bottom of your bag, the straps, coat sleeves, and phone case before carrying them inside.

💡Explanation

Rainwater often drips from bag bottoms and cuffs onto desks and floors.

⚠️Notes / Precautions

Use this towel only for rainwater on outer items, not for your face or hands.

3

Set wet shoes on an absorbent tray

Step 3

Take off your shoes and place them side by side on a shoe tray, with the toes facing outward. If the uppers are very wet, press them lightly with tissue.

💡Explanation

A fixed tray keeps the wet area limited to one small spot.

⚠️Notes / Precautions

Do not put wet shoes into the shoe cabinet right away. Let the surface dry first.

4

Put keys and transit card into one tray

Step 4

Take your keys, transit card, and wallet out of your bag and place them into a small tray near the entryway or desk. Keep only daily essentials there.

💡Explanation

A fixed drop zone prevents morning searching, especially after a messy rainy commute.

⚠️Notes / Precautions

Do not use a large tray, or it will slowly become a junk area.

5

Hang your coat and reusable bag separately

Step 5

Hang the damp coat on one hook and the reusable shopping bag on another hook beside it. Leave a little space between them.

💡Explanation

Wet fabric dries slowly when stacked together, so separate hooks work better in small apartments.

⚠️Notes / Precautions

If the coat is very wet, do not hang it inside the closet yet.

6

Place a moisture absorber near the shoe tray

Step 6

Put a small moisture absorber, charcoal pouch, or reusable drying pouch beside the shoe tray or umbrella stand. Keep it in the corner so it does not block movement.

💡Explanation

Rainy-season entryways can smell damp, and a fixed moisture spot makes upkeep easier.

⚠️Notes / Precautions

If you use a disposable moisture box, replace it when it fills with water.

7

Rinse and hang the rain towel

Step 7

After wiping, rinse the small towel at the sink, wring it out, and hang it open on a towel bar. Do not leave it crumpled in the entryway.

💡Explanation

A dry towel is ready for the next rainy day and does not create odor.

⚠️Notes / Precautions

If the towel smells, wash it properly or replace it.

8

Check the floor and tomorrow’s essentials

Step 8

Wipe any remaining water marks from the entry floor, then check the tray for your keys, wallet, and transit card. Make sure shoes, umbrella, and coat are in their fixed spots.

💡Explanation

This final reset keeps the entryway clean and predictable.

⚠️Notes / Precautions

Do not leave shopping bags or delivery boxes piled in the entryway overnight.
