How to Set Up an Entryway Parcel Unpacking and Recycling Box
Create a small parcel station in the entryway so opening packages, flattening boxes, and holding recycling all happen in one place.

Clear a small surface

Move bags, keys, and loose items from the bench or cabinet so one parcel can sit flat.
A stable surface keeps tools and cardboard from sliding onto the floor.
Do not unpack parcels on stairs or in a crowded doorway.
Place a shallow recycling box

Set a shallow box under the bench or beside the cabinet for cardboard, paper filler, and clean mailers.
A shallow box is easy to check and easy to empty before it overflows.
Keep wet or food-stained packaging separate from clean recycling.
Add a safe opening tool

Keep safety scissors or a small mail opener on a mat, with the cutting edge covered or facing inward.
A fixed tool spot stops you from hunting for a blade every time a package arrives.
Put sharp tools away after use and keep them away from children.
Open on the mat

Place the parcel on the mat and cut along the tape slowly, keeping fingers away from the cutting line.
The mat protects the bench and keeps the work contained.
Never cut toward your body.
Flatten the box right away

After removing the contents, open the folds and press the cardboard flat.
Flat cardboard takes much less space and does not take over the entryway.
Check for small items or receipts before flattening.
Separate paper filler

Put clean filler paper, paper bags, and non-recyclable pieces into separate spots.
Sorting while unpacking is easier than sorting a large mixed pile later.
Follow local rules for materials you are unsure about.
Keep one reusable pocket

Place reusable bubble mailers or sturdy paper bags in one small side pocket.
A small limit keeps useful packing materials available without letting them pile up.
Do not keep damaged or dirty packing materials.
Reset tools and recycling

Put the scissors away and take the recycling out when the box is about half full.
A clear ending keeps the entryway from becoming a parcel storage area.
Do not let cardboard block the doorway.
