How to Set Up a Rainy-Day Shoe Drying Tray by the Entryway
Prepare a waterproof tray and raised mat so wet shoes have a place to drip and air out.

Clear the walking path

Move shoes away from the entry path before setting up the drying spot.
A drying area should not block walking, or it will get kicked apart.
Do not place wet shoes where the door will hit them.
Wipe floor water

Use a cloth to wipe existing mud and water from the doorway floor.
Cleaning first keeps water from being trapped under the tray.
Handle slippery floors first to prevent falls.
Place a waterproof tray

Set a low waterproof tray near the door but outside the walking path.
The tray collects water in one place for easy emptying.
The tray should sit flat and stable.
Add a raised insert

Place a rubber raised mat or smooth stones inside the tray.
Lifting shoes keeps soles out of pooled water and improves airflow.
Use stable stones or inserts so shoes do not tip.
Wipe soles first

Before placing shoes down, wipe obvious mud and water from the soles.
Less mud in the tray makes cleanup easier.
Rinse and dry the muddy cloth afterward.
Space shoes apart

Set damp shoes on the raised surface with gaps between pairs.
Gaps help sides and soles dry more evenly.
Do not force-dry leather shoes with strong heat.
Empty collected water

After a while, check the tray and pour away standing water.
Less water means less moisture returning to the soles.
Do not spill muddy water into shared hallways.
Clean the tray after drying

When shoes are dry, rinse or wipe the tray and insert before storing them.
A clean tray is ready for the next rainy day.
If it smells, clean it thoroughly before reusing.
