Organize a Small Desk Drawer in 15 Minutes
This tutorial is for a drawer that keeps collecting pens, sticky notes, cables, clips, and tiny office tools. By emptying it, sorting it, and giving each item a simple home, you can turn a messy drawer into a calm everyday workspace in about 15 minutes.

Check What Is Inside

Open the drawer fully and scan the main item types, such as pens, clips, sticky notes, cables, earbuds, small tools, receipts, or spare office supplies.
A quick scan helps you understand the drawer before you start moving things around, and it shows how many zones you may need.
Avoid digging through a half-open drawer, since it can slide forward or pinch your fingers.
Empty Everything Onto the Desk

Take every item out and place it on a clean desktop. Let similar items naturally gather together, but do not worry about perfect sorting yet.
An empty drawer reveals the real volume of stuff and makes it easier to spot duplicates, old items, and things that belong somewhere else.
Tiny parts can roll off the desk, so clear space away from the edge before you begin.
Wipe the Empty Drawer

Use a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove dust, paper scraps, and eraser crumbs. Spend a few extra seconds on the corners.
A clean base helps trays sit flat and makes the finished drawer feel noticeably fresher.
If you use a damp cloth, let the drawer dry fully before returning paper, electronics, or metal items.
Sort Into Keep, Move, and Discard

Make three groups: items you use daily or weekly, items that should live somewhere else, and broken or unnecessary items to discard or recycle.
A small drawer should hold frequent-use items. Reducing the quantity first makes every divider work better.
Dispose of batteries, ink, blades, and electronic accessories according to local rules.
Test Trays and Dividers

Place small boxes, shallow trays, or drawer dividers inside the drawer and test the layout. Start with the longest pens and cables.
Test-fitting prevents wasted space and often lets you reuse boxes or trays you already have.
Do not force a divider that fits too tightly, because it can scrape the drawer or warp over time.
Place Daily Items Within Easy Reach

Put your most-used pens, notes, clips, and charging cable near the front or in the easiest compartment to reach. Put backups farther back.
Frequency matters most. The more often you use something, the easier it should be to grab and return.
Keep sharp tools out of the front loose area; place them in a separate compartment or covered case.
Remove Duplicates and Extras

Review duplicate pens, old notes, broken cables, and mystery parts. Keep only the amount you will actually use and the items in good condition.
Drawers usually get messy because extras keep accumulating. Removing surplus items helps the drawer stay organized longer.
Before discarding a cable, confirm it is not the only charger or adapter for an important device.
Do a Final Reach Test

Close and reopen the drawer, then try grabbing a pen, a note, and a cable. If you need to move too many things, adjust the layout.
A reach test checks whether the drawer works in real life, not just in a tidy photo.
Do not fill every inch. Leave a little open space for temporary items.
